Earthing system demand is driven by: grid connection earthing for UK DNO (Distribution Network Operator) infrastructure projects; rail earthing (Network Rail CP7 investment programme); and commercial construction earthing to BS 7430. The UK imposes ZERO import duty on cable trays (HS 7308.90) and earthing rods (HS 7326.90) under the UK Global Tariff MFN schedule, no FTA required. Compliance requirement: cable management products must meet BS 4678 or BS EN 50085. Earthing rods for DNO and rail projects must comply with BS 7430 and BS EN 62305-3. MTC documentation standard required by UK contractors is EN 10204 Type 3.1 (or Type 3.2 for Network Rail approved products). The UK–India Trade and Goods Agreement (in negotiation, provisional application anticipated) is expected to further improve tariff competitiveness for precision engineering components from India to UK buyers.

The coupling, where two rod sections join, is the most vulnerable point in the whole installation. A carbon-steel coupling on a copper-bonded rod creates a bimetallic junction that corrodes far faster than the rod body itself, particularly in aggressive soil. Specify stainless steel or solid copper couplings every time, and treat a mild-steel coupling offered "to save cost" as a warning sign, not a bargain.
Find out who actually does the copper-bonding: an in-house electroplating line, or a subcontractor a few steps removed. Ask for a DFT test report and ISO 9001 certificate as samples. Then ask one pointed technical question, the target resistance at your soil resistivity, and notice whether the answer comes from someone who understands soil chemistry or gets bounced back unanswered. A real manufacturer controls the plating process end to end and backs every claim with paperwork.
Yes. Manufacturers worth shortlisting build to IS 3043 and IEC 62561 together, and IEC 62561 in particular is the internationally recognised standard for earthing and LPS components across the Gulf, Africa, Southeast Asia and the UK. Put IEC 62561 in the enquiry for any export project so the copper-coating and mechanical test reports come back in the format your consultant expects to see.
Power-system (equipment) earthing carries fault current from electrical faults and is sized to the switchgear's fault level. Lightning-protection earthing carries very high, very short-duration surge current from a strike and needs its own low-impedance path, ideally a dedicated ring or rods bonded to, but distinct from, the main power earth. IEC 62305 governs the LPS-side design; both systems still need equipotential bonding together at one point.
Salt-and-charcoal is what IS 3043 Annex A describes for reducing soil resistivity, and it still meets the standard. Bentonite-based ground enhancement compound (GEM) is not specifically called out in IS 3043 but is fully compliant. IEC 62561-5 covers backfill materials and GEM qualifies under it. GEM outperforms salt-charcoal in two ways: it holds moisture longer in summer without the watering cycle, and it does not leach salt into surrounding soil (which matters near building foundations and road sub-bases). For export to Saudi and UAE we always specify GEM, the SASO and DEWA inspection teams expect it.
