Flat strip has lower inductance at high frequencies — important for lightning down-conductors and fault-current paths in switchyards. Stranded wire is more flexible and easier to route through cable trays for equipment bonding. Most substations use both: strip for grid loops, wire for equipment tails.
25×3 mm GI or 25×3 mm tinned copper is the working standard for a medium-industry earth grid. For substations and data centres step up to 50×6 mm. The cross-section is set by the prospective fault current and clearing time — IEEE 80 gives the formula. We size on request.
Buried grid strip is always bare — it relies on soil contact to dissipate current. Above-ground equipment-bonding strip can be insulated (PVC sleeve) in green/yellow for code-clear identification, especially in IT rooms and pharma cleanrooms.
Bolted joints with bimetallic washers are easy and inspectable. Exothermic welding (Cadweld, Aldweld) gives a molecular fusion joint with no resistance drift — the gold standard for buried grid joints. Vajra supplies both jointing systems and the moulds for exothermic.
HDG GI strip lasts 20–25 years in average Indian soil (pH 6–8, modest chlorides). In coastal or industrial-effluent soils, life drops to 10–15 years. Copper strip lasts 40+ years in the same soils. Plan for replacement (or upgrade to copper) at the asset's mid-life refurbishment.
Manufacturing & Surface Treatment
All products are manufactured at Vajra's Howrah facility under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. In-house roll-forming, welding, galvanizing and testing — without sub-contractor dependency — ensures consistent dimensional accuracy and surface quality across export orders.
Precision Roll-Forming
CNC roll-forming lines capable of ±0.1 mm dimensional tolerance on MS, GI, SS, and aluminium sections.
Hot-Dip Galvanizing
In-house HDG plant conforming to ASTM A123 / IS 2629. Average coating: 85–140 µm. Pre-treatment: alkaline degreasing → pickling → fluxing.
Welding & Fabrication
MIG, TIG, SAW welding. Coded welders under ASME IX / IS 2825 qualification. Weld inspection by UT / DPT available.
Surface Treatment
Hot-dip galvanizing · Pre-galvanized GI · Powder coating (Tribo gun, 60–80 µm DFT) · Mill finish · Chromate passivation.
