When is a pipe-in-pipe electrode better than a plate?

Accepted Answer

Pipe electrodes go deeper than plates with less excavation — they suit congested industrial sites and urban substations where soil access is limited. They also drop quicker to low-resistivity strata. For airport sites, switchyards and rooftop industrial earthing, pipe-in-pipe is often the practical choice.

What is the standard bore and length for a pipe electrode?

Accepted Answer

40 mm NB (1.5") or 50 mm NB (2") bore at 2.5 m or 3.0 m length is the IS 3043 working standard, with a 25 mm NB internal pipe perforated for the watering and backfill column. Larger bores cost more without lowering resistance much — depth is the lever.

Why is salt-and-charcoal backfill used, and is there a modern alternative?

Accepted Answer

Salt-and-charcoal lowers soil resistivity around the electrode and holds moisture. Modern alternatives — bentonite-based ground enhancement compounds (GEM) — perform better and don't leach salt into the surrounding soil (important near foundations). For premium and export work we recommend GEM; for budget work, salt-charcoal still meets code.

Should the pipe be galvanized inside as well as outside?

Accepted Answer

Yes — internal HDG (or coal-tar epoxy) is necessary because the watering pipe wets the inside surface and corrodes uncoated steel quickly. Our standard pipe electrode is HDG inside and out to ASTM A123, with the watering pipe pre-perforated.

How often should the pit be watered, and who is responsible?

In Indian summer (March–June) once a month; in rains, no watering needed; in winter every 6–8 weeks. Watering responsibility belongs to the plant maintenance team — we supply a laminated maintenance card with each pit kit, in English, Hindi and Arabic, that fits inside the chamber.

Can pipe electrodes be driven by hammer rather than dug in?

Accepted Answer

Pipe electrodes are too thin-walled to drive — they buckle. For driven (rather than dug) earthing, use solid copper-bonded rods (separate product). Pipe electrodes need a 600 mm wide excavated pit with backfill.

How are pipe electrodes connected to the earth grid conductor?

Accepted Answer

A brass terminal at the pipe head accepts a 25×3 mm or 50×6 mm GI strip (or 70/95 sq mm copper conductor), bolted with cup-square bolts and brass washers. The connection should be inside the chamber, accessible for inspection. We supply the terminal as part of the electrode.

Are pipe electrodes acceptable for lightning protection earthing?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when sized and tested to IEC 62561-2 they qualify as Type-A earth electrodes for LPS. For tall stacks, telecom towers and process plants in Indian and GCC sites, pipe electrodes are widely used as the LPS earth termination, often in a triangular array per stack.

Accepted Answer

Yes — Vajra ships a full pit kit: electrode, watering pipe and funnel, backfill compound (salt-charcoal or GEM), brass terminal, concrete chamber rim and cover. One BOQ line, one delivery, one installer task. It cuts coordination errors on site.
