03Frequently Asked

Buying earthing pipes, answered

Practical answers for procurement, engineering and EPC teams, covering specification, standards, finish, lead time and export logistics.

IS 3043 clause 4.3 covers pipe electrodes. The minimum bore is 38 mm (1.5 inch NB) with a 4–5 mm wall thickness; 50 mm NB is the more common site choice for better soil contact surface. Standard burial depths are 2.5 m or 3.0 m, but IS 3043 recommends going deeper when soil resistivity is above 50 Ω·m, depth reduces resistance far more effectively than wider bore. An inner perforated pipe (25 mm NB) carries the backfill and watering column. Our standard electrode is 50 mm NB outer, 25 mm NB inner, 3.0 m length, HDG inside and out.

IS 3043 targets less than 1 Ω for the completed earthing system measured at the terminal. For pipe electrodes, a single 3 m electrode in average Indian soil (resistivity 50–100 Ω·m) typically delivers 3–8 Ω, so two to four electrodes in parallel are needed to reach the system target. Measurement uses the three-electrode fall-of-potential method (Megger DET4TC2 or equivalent) at least 7 days after backfill compaction and during the dry season. We include the test procedure sheet and acceptance form in every pit kit.

Yes. IS 3043 requires a continuous protective coating on GI pipe electrodes. We hot-dip galvanize to ASTM A123, minimum 85 µm (610 g/m²) on the outer surface and apply a coal-tar epoxy to the inner bore. Galvanizing thickness is verified by a magnetic gauge on every batch before dispatch, and the batch certificate includes readings at three points per electrode length. Coastal and chemical-plant projects can specify a duplex finish (HDG plus epoxy topcoat) for the section above ground.

Salt-and-charcoal is what IS 3043 Annex A describes for reducing soil resistivity, and it still meets the standard. Bentonite-based ground enhancement compound (GEM) is not specifically called out in IS 3043 but is fully compliant. IEC 62561-5 covers backfill materials and GEM qualifies under it. GEM outperforms salt-charcoal in two ways: it holds moisture longer in summer without the watering cycle, and it does not leach salt into surrounding soil (which matters near building foundations and road sub-bases). For export to Saudi and UAE we always specify GEM, the SASO and DEWA inspection teams expect it.

Yes, the inner bore matters as much as the outer. The watering pipe wets the inner surface continuously, and uncoated mild steel inside corrodes within 3–5 years in most Indian soils, blocking the watering column and ending the maintenance regime. Our standard pipe electrode is HDG inside and out to ASTM A123 on the outer and coal-tar epoxy on the inner, verified by borescope on sample units from each batch.

FFabrication Capability

Manufacturing & Surface Treatment

All products are manufactured at Vajra's Howrah facility under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. In-house roll-forming, welding, galvanizing and testing — without sub-contractor dependency — ensures consistent dimensional accuracy and surface quality across export orders.

Precision Roll-Forming

CNC roll-forming lines capable of ±0.1 mm dimensional tolerance on MS, GI, SS, and aluminium sections.

Hot-Dip Galvanizing

In-house HDG plant conforming to ASTM A123 / IS 2629. Average coating: 85–140 µm. Pre-treatment: alkaline degreasing → pickling → fluxing.

Welding & Fabrication

MIG, TIG, SAW welding. Coded welders under ASME IX / IS 2825 qualification. Weld inspection by UT / DPT available.

Surface Treatment

Hot-dip galvanizing · Pre-galvanized GI · Powder coating (Tribo gun, 60–80 µm DFT) · Mill finish · Chromate passivation.
