IS 3043 is the Indian code of practice, it defines plate material, minimum dimensions (600×600 mm copper or GI), depth of burial, backfill, watering arrangement and the resistance acceptance target. IEC 62561-2 covers the same component requirements internationally, and BS 7430 is the British equivalent still widely cited in African and GCC project specifications. Our plates are manufactured to IS 3043 with material certificates written to align with IEC 62561-2, so the same shipment satisfies an Indian utility tender and an international EPC's BOQ without re-testing.
IS 3043 clause 5.3 sets the target at less than 1 Ω for most industrial and substation earthing systems, measured at the electrode terminal. Verification uses the three-electrode fall-of-potential method with a calibrated earth tester (Megger DET4TC2, Kyoritsu 4105A or equivalent). Measurements should be taken after the backfill has had 7 or more days to consolidate, during the dry season, dry soil gives the worst-case reading, and that is the value that counts. Insurance underwriters and utility distribution companies increasingly require a signed commissioning test certificate before energising a transformer; we include the test form in every pit kit.
Saudi SEC Distribution Standard SSS-03.01 and UAE DEWA earthing specifications both follow IEC 62561-2 rather than IS 3043. The practical differences are: (1) GCC tenders require bentonite-based ground enhancement compound (GEM) instead of salt-and-charcoal backfill. GEM does not leach into surrounding soil and holds moisture better in desert conditions; (2) Saudi specs call for copper electrodes at all utility connection points, not GI; (3) the Saudi acceptance test requires each electrode to achieve ≤5 Ω before the distribution company will connect. We manufacture to both IS 3043 and IEC 62561-2 from the same facility. A GCC shipment leaves our works with the IEC material certificate, an Arabic-language installation guide and bentonite GEM already packed in the kit.
Yes, testing is mandatory under IS 3043 clause 6.6 at commissioning, and most industrial occupier and utility licences make it a site maintenance requirement. Typical re-testing intervals: annually for critical industrial (substations, hospitals, data centres, explosive-area buildings) and every five years for general commercial and industrial buildings. IEC 62305-3 requires LPS (lightning protection) earth resistance testing once per year as part of the annual inspection. Many project-specific QA plans go further. Reliance, BHEL and L&T contracts we supply require independent third-party test reports at commissioning. We include the measurement method, pass criteria and report format in every supply.
IS 3043 specifies 600×600 mm minimum for copper plates at 3 mm thickness, and 600×600 mm for GI at 6 mm. Burial depth of 3.0–3.5 m in a 600 mm wide brick-lined pit is the working standard. Depth is the primary lever for reducing resistance, going from 2 m to 3.5 m typically halves resistance in layered soils. Salt-and-charcoal backfill (or GEM for export work) reduces seasonal variation. A complete pit kit from us includes the plate, watering pipe and funnel, backfill compound, brass terminal lug, and inspection chamber components in one delivery.
