Defence Parts. Buyer Questions Answered
Covering specification, standards, finish, export documentation, lead times and procurement logistics for defence-grade precision parts from India.
Defence-grade precision manufacture is a specialised subset of India's broader precision engineering base. Buyers shortlist on verified material traceability, documented inspection processes and a track record of controlled-batch production, not general machining capability alone. Vajra International produces tight-tolerance components under full material traceability in Howrah, with a documented history connected to domestic defence supply through the group.
Defence-related precision machined parts typically export under HS 84879000 (machine parts) or HS 73269099 (other articles of iron/steel), depending on function. Defence-related exports may also require additional export licensing or clearance beyond standard HS classification, so confirm this with your compliance team given the sensitivity of the end use.
Defence precision parts generally fall under the same HSN codes as standard machined components (8487/7326) and attract 18% GST domestically. Exports are zero-rated under an LUT, but confirm any defence-specific export compliance requirements separately from the standard tax treatment, since these are governed by different regulations.
Full heat/batch traceability from raw material receipt through machining to the finished part is standard; every component should be traceable back to its specific material certificate. This is more rigorous than standard commercial machining traceability and should be confirmed explicitly, including how records are retained and for how long.
Pricing reflects both the machining complexity and the additional documentation, inspection and traceability overhead defence-grade work requires. It's typically higher than equivalent commercial-grade parts because of this added quality burden, not because of different machining processes.
