Lightning Protection. Buyer Questions Answered
Covering specification, standards, finish, export documentation, lead times and procurement logistics for lightning protection from India.
There's no single verified leader in this category either. LPS manufacture spreads across several Indian earthing and electrical hubs. Buyers shortlist on IEC 62305 design compliance, IEC 62561 component certification and genuine integration with a proper earthing grid, not marketing claims. Vajra International manufactures air terminals, down conductors and bonding hardware in Howrah, tied into its own earthing systems.
Air terminals and down-conductor tape in GI/steel typically export under HS 73269099 (other articles of iron or steel); copper down-conductor components fall under HS 74199990 (other articles of copper). Confirm the exact subheading with your customs broker for your specific BOM.
LPS components fall under HSN 7326/7419 and attract 18% GST domestically. Exports are zero-rated under an LUT (no IGST) or shipped with IGST paid and refunded. An overseas buyer pays only their own country's import duty on the FOB/CIF price.
Conventional (Franklin rod) air terminals follow the well-established rolling-sphere and mesh method under IEC 62305, accepted internationally without controversy. ESE (Early Streamer Emission) terminals claim an extended protection radius, but IEC 62305 doesn't recognise them; only some national standards like NF C 17-102 do. Many international consultants specify conventional terminals specifically to avoid that certification gap. Confirm which your project's governing standard accepts before ordering.
Pricing depends heavily on structure height, roof area or complexity and down-conductor route count. A simple building needs far less material than a complex industrial structure or telecom tower. Share your structure drawing, height, footprint, roof features, for an accurate quote rather than relying on a generic per-building figure.

Earthing Material Manufacturers India: How to Qualify a Supplier Before You Place the Order
India has hundreds of earthing material manufacturers. Most ship GI plates. A handful can demonstrate IS 3043 and IEC 62561 compliance with actual test records. Here is how to tell which is which.

IS 2309 divides structures into three risk zones and sets the conductor and component requirements for each. Here is how to read the standard, select components, and write a specification that passes inspection.
