IEC 62561-2 Class H sets a minimum copper coating thickness of 250 µm on the rod's outer surface. Verification uses either the Faraday-cup electrochemical stripping method or a cross-section SEM measurement, both are described in IEC 62561-2 Annex A. We test a sample from every production batch and include the thickness certificate in the dispatch document pack. A rod that does not meet 250 µm Class H cannot be described as IEC 62561-compliant, regardless of the supplier's claim, ask for the test method and measurement record, not just a certificate.
UL 467 (Grounding and Bonding Equipment) is the North American benchmark. It specifies a minimum copper coating of 10 mils (254 µm) on earth rods, almost identical to IEC 62561-2 Class H in practice. The test methods differ slightly, but rods produced to IEC 62561-2 Class H pass the UL 467 dimensional requirement. For US data centre or oil-and-gas projects importing from India, buyers typically ask for IEC 62561-2 certification and accept it in lieu of a formal UL listing. For GCC projects, IEC 62561-2 is the explicit standard in Saudi SEC and UAE DEWA earthing specifications.
IS 3043 clause 4.4 covers rod electrodes. It specifies that rods must be metallic, driven vertically, with a minimum cross-section sufficient to carry the prospective fault current without overheating, and the top of the rod must be accessible in an inspection chamber. IS 3043 does not set a minimum copper coating for copper-bonded rods, it defers to the material standard. For driven rods specifically, IS 3043 prefers harder ground conditions where plates are impractical. In practice, copper-bonded rods are now the default for driven earthing in India because they combine the driving strength of steel with copper's corrosion resistance.
A copper-bonded rod is a high-carbon steel core with 250 µm of pure copper metallurgically bonded around it, it drives without bending and has the surface corrosion resistance of copper. Solid copper rods deform on driving in anything but very soft soil and cost five to eight times more per metre. The copper-bonded rod is the global standard for driven earthing under both IEC 62561-2 and UL 467. Solid copper rods are used in specialist cases, very aggressive soil chemistry or sites where steel content is prohibited.
14.2 mm diameter handles most light-to-medium soil; 17.2 mm is the working choice for harder, rocky or gravelly soil where driving force is higher and the rod needs the extra cross-section to stay straight at depth. Standard lengths are 1.2 m, 1.5 m and 3.0 m, coupled sets reach 4.5 m, 6 m or deeper. Use depth to reduce resistance before adding more rods in parallel. Length is set by the soil resistivity profile from a Wenner four-pin survey; we size from the survey data and system fault current on request.
Manufacturing & Surface Treatment
All products are manufactured at Vajra's Howrah facility under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. In-house roll-forming, welding, galvanizing and testing — without sub-contractor dependency — ensures consistent dimensional accuracy and surface quality across export orders.
Precision Roll-Forming
CNC roll-forming lines capable of ±0.1 mm dimensional tolerance on MS, GI, SS, and aluminium sections.
Hot-Dip Galvanizing
In-house HDG plant conforming to ASTM A123 / IS 2629. Average coating: 85–140 µm. Pre-treatment: alkaline degreasing → pickling → fluxing.
Welding & Fabrication
MIG, TIG, SAW welding. Coded welders under ASME IX / IS 2825 qualification. Weld inspection by UT / DPT available.
Surface Treatment
Hot-dip galvanizing · Pre-galvanized GI · Powder coating (Tribo gun, 60–80 µm DFT) · Mill finish · Chromate passivation.
