Power-system (equipment) earthing carries fault current from electrical faults and is sized to the switchgear's fault level. Lightning-protection earthing carries very high, very short-duration surge current from a strike and needs its own low-impedance path, ideally a dedicated ring or rods bonded to, but distinct from, the main power earth. IEC 62305 governs the LPS-side design; both systems still need equipotential bonding together at one point.

A standard 5 kg demolition hammer or a pneumatic breaker works for 14.2 mm rods; 17.2 mm in hard soil needs a pneumatic driver.
