Structural Steel for Australia projects, made in India
What it takes to land structural steel on a Australia site: the port they clear through, the standards a consultant will hold them to, and the paperwork that has to travel with them.
Getting structural steel into Australia
An Australian mine site does not reject product on price. It rejects on marking. AS/NZS 3000 for earthing and AS 1657 for grating, with a certificate that names the standard rather than gesturing at it. India already ships around 15% of its cable tray output into Australia, most of it into Pilbara and Queensland resources work.
Port of entry
Port Botany, Sydney
Also cleared through Port of Melbourne, Port of Fremantle, Perth, Port of Brisbane.
Shipped FOB, CIF, CFR.

Trade picture
Australia is the #3 global importer of cable trays from India. 260 shipments, approximately 15% of global cable tray exports from India (Volza customs data). The dominant buying sector is resources: Western Australian mining projects (BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue at the Pilbara iron ore sites and Browse LNG basin) require HDG ladder cable trays to AS/NZS standards, electroforged grating panels to AS 1657, and earthing systems to AS 3000 across large open-cut mine sites. The Queensland LNG sector (Curtis Island, Gladstone) drives structural steel and pipe support imports. Australia imposes ZERO import duty on cable trays (HS 7308.90) and gratings (HS 7308.90.10) under the MFN tariff schedule, no FTA required. The primary compliance standard is AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules) for earthing, AS 1657 for gratings, and ASTM A123 (accepted by most Australian mining specifications) for HDG coating thickness. Inspection documents (EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTC, coating-thickness test report) are mandatory for most mining contractor approvals.
Custom Structural Steel Work
Heavy structural fabrication, built-up columns and beams, plate girders, gussets, base plates and brackets, welded by qualified WPS, fit-checked and finished by galvanizing or paint to project specification.

Structural Steel into Australia — the questions that come up
Answered by the people who make the product, not a sales desk.
Hot-dip galvanizing suits outdoor, long-service structures where decades of maintenance-free corrosion protection matters most. Epoxy/PU painting is common where a specific safety colour code is required, for indoor structures, or where the structure's size exceeds practical galvanizing bath dimensions, very large plate girders sometimes fall into this category. Confirm your galvanizing bath size constraints against your largest fabricated piece early in design.
Ask for their welding procedure qualification records, crane or handling capacity for heavy pieces, and a reference project of comparable scale and complexity. Find out whether cutting, forming and welding are all in-house. A fabricator who subcontracts heavy welding to unknown third parties can't guarantee consistent quality across your order.
Yes. Building to IS 800/IS 2062 is standard for Indian fabricators, who can also reference EN 1090, the European structural steelwork execution standard, or AWS D1.1, the American welding code, for export projects. Confirm which code governs your project's design and specify it explicitly in the enquiry.
This depends on the fabricator's shearing, forming and welding equipment capacity. Confirm the maximum plate thickness they can process for your specific component; plate girders and heavy brackets often need thicker plate than standard built-up beams. Ask this specifically rather than assuming standard capacity covers your heaviest section.
Girders up to 12 m ship inside 40 ft containers; longer girders go on flat-rack containers with crane-loading. Coastal shipping from Indian ports to GCC and East Africa is well-established, we use Mundra, Pipavav, Mumbai, Chennai, Visakhapatnam depending on destination.
