Industrial Flooring for Australia projects, made in India

What it takes to land industrial flooring on a Australia site: the port they clear through, the standards a consultant will hold them to, and the paperwork that has to travel with them.

01Route and compliance

Getting industrial flooring into Australia

An Australian mine site does not reject product on price. It rejects on marking. AS/NZS 3000 for earthing and AS 1657 for grating, with a certificate that names the standard rather than gesturing at it. India already ships around 15% of its cable tray output into Australia, most of it into Pilbara and Queensland resources work.

Port of entry

Also cleared through Port of Melbourne, Port of Fremantle, Perth, Port of Brisbane.

Trade picture

Australia is the #3 global importer of cable trays from India. 260 shipments, approximately 15% of global cable tray exports from India (Volza customs data). The dominant buying sector is resources: Western Australian mining projects (BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue at the Pilbara iron ore sites and Browse LNG basin) require HDG ladder cable trays to AS/NZS standards, electroforged grating panels to AS 1657, and earthing systems to AS 3000 across large open-cut mine sites. The Queensland LNG sector (Curtis Island, Gladstone) drives structural steel and pipe support imports. Australia imposes ZERO import duty on cable trays (HS 7308.90) and gratings (HS 7308.90.10) under the MFN tariff schedule, no FTA required. The primary compliance standard is AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules) for earthing, AS 1657 for gratings, and ASTM A123 (accepted by most Australian mining specifications) for HDG coating thickness. Inspection documents (EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTC, coating-thickness test report) are mandatory for most mining contractor approvals.

06Questions buyers ask

Industrial Flooring into Australia — the questions that come up

Answered by the people who make the product, not a sales desk.

Chequered plate gives a solid, anti-slip surface that contains spills and stops small dropped items falling through, the right choice for enclosed plant floors and walkways where containment matters. Grating ventilates, drains and lets light through: better above process areas, drains, or wherever trapped gas or heat is a concern. Many plants use chequered plate on solid floor areas and grating over drains and process voids.

Chequered plate is priced close to standard hot-rolled steel plate cost plus a processing premium for the raised pattern rolling, cutting, drilling and galvanizing, FOB India. Get a live quote against your specific thickness (3, 5 or 6 mm) and finished panel size, since steel base cost moves with the market.

3 mm suits light pedestrian walkways with minimal point loading. 5 mm is the general-purpose default for most plant floors and platforms. 6 mm is specified for areas with higher point loads, trolley/cart traffic, or longer unsupported spans. Confirm against your actual traffic and load case rather than defaulting to the thinnest option to save cost.

Diamond pattern is the more common general-purpose anti-slip pattern for industrial flooring. Tear-drop pattern is sometimes preferred where a smoother appearance combined with slip resistance is wanted, or per a specific project or regional standard. Either provides adequate anti-slip performance for standard industrial use; the choice is often driven by project specification or regional convention rather than functional difference.

For wet-process and grease-heavy floors, an epoxy carborundum coating on top of the chequered pattern adds significant slip resistance. Pharmaceutical and food clients specify it. Cost is roughly 25 % extra; life depends on traffic and chemicals.
