Buying built-up sections & girders — answered
Practical answers for procurement, engineering and EPC teams — covering specification, standards, finish, lead time and export logistics.
Built-up sections (welded from plate) are right when the required cross-section doesn't exist as a rolled section, or when the span/load combination would need a non-standard heavy rolled. Big industrial buildings, plate girders, and crane runways routinely use built-ups. Rolled sections are the cheaper choice when they exist for the load.
E250 (Fe410) is the workhorse for general structural work. E350 (Fe490) gives 40 % higher yield and is justified when section depth is constrained or weight is critical. Heavy industrial buildings often mix the two — E250 for columns, E350 for trusses and crane beams.
Welders are qualified to AWS D1.1, ASME IX and EN ISO 9606. Procedures (WPS, PQR) are pre-approved by the customer's TPI on first contract and shared as part of the QA dossier. We employ in-house welding inspectors qualified to AWS CWI / CSWIP 3.1.
Girders up to 12 m ship inside 40 ft containers; longer girders go on flat-rack containers with crane-loading. Coastal shipping from Indian ports to GCC and East Africa is well-established — we use Mundra, Pipavav, Mumbai, Chennai, Visakhapatnam depending on destination.
Plate UT before fabrication, fit-up checks before welding, visual on every weld, MPI/UT on critical welds (to the project's NDE schedule), galvanizing thickness on every member, and dimensional check before painting. Reports are batch-linked.
Manufacturing & Surface Treatment
All products are manufactured at Vajra's Howrah facility under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. In-house roll-forming, welding, galvanizing and testing — without sub-contractor dependency — ensures consistent dimensional accuracy and surface quality across export orders.
Precision Roll-Forming
CNC roll-forming lines capable of ±0.1 mm dimensional tolerance on MS, GI, SS, and aluminium sections.
Hot-Dip Galvanizing
In-house HDG plant conforming to ASTM A123 / IS 2629. Average coating: 85–140 µm. Pre-treatment: alkaline degreasing → pickling → fluxing.
Welding & Fabrication
MIG, TIG, SAW welding. Coded welders under ASME IX / IS 2825 qualification. Weld inspection by UT / DPT available.
Surface Treatment
Hot-dip galvanizing · Pre-galvanized GI · Powder coating (Tribo gun, 60–80 µm DFT) · Mill finish · Chromate passivation.
