Lightning Protection for Nigeria projects, made in India

What it takes to land lightning protection on a Nigeria site: the port they clear through, the standards a consultant will hold them to, and the paperwork that has to travel with them.

01Route and compliance

Getting lightning protection into Nigeria

In Nigeria the delay is usually at the port. SON conformity assessment has to be arranged before the goods ship, and importers who leave it until the container lands pay for that in demurrage. Nigeria already takes a third of India's pin-type cable lug exports.

Port of entry

Apapa Port, Lagos

Also cleared through Tin Can Island Port, Lagos, Port Harcourt Port.

Shipped FOB, CIF, CFR.

Standards that apply here

  • SON (Standards Organisation Nigeria)
  • IEC 61386
  • BS 4678
  • ISO 9001:2015
  • IEC 62305
  • IS 2309
  • IEC 62561

Every shipment travels with mill test certificates against the grade specified on your order.

Who buys this in Nigeria

Power Distribution (DISCOS) · Oil & Gas (Shell, Chevron, TotalEnergies) · Telecommunications (MTN, Airtel) · Construction & Real Estate · Mining · Industrial Manufacturing

Trade picture

Nigeria is the #4 global importer of cable trays from India (207 shipments). #1 globally for pin-type cable lugs from India (30 shipments, 33% share). Lagos is the West Africa re-export hub.

06Questions buyers ask

Lightning Protection into Nigeria — the questions that come up

Answered by the people who make the product, not a sales desk.

Copper (typically 25×3 mm) offers superior conductivity and corrosion resistance and is the international default, especially where the conductor is exposed and long-term maintenance access is limited. GI tape is more economical and adequate for many industrial and less-critical structures, particularly where it can be periodically inspected. Match the choice to structure criticality and coastal/corrosive exposure.

IEC 62305 is the current international standard for lightning protection, covering risk assessment, protection levels and the full LPS design methodology, and is what most export/international projects reference. IS 2309 is the older Indian code, still referenced on some domestic projects. IEC 62561 separately covers the component-level test requirements (clamps, conductors, terminals) for both. Ask which your project specifies; they are not interchangeable frameworks.

Commercial invoice and packing list, material certification for conductor tape (copper purity or GI galvanizing thickness), IEC 62561 component test reports where specified, and a Certificate of Origin for duty relief. For projects requiring a formal LPS design, a risk assessment and protection-level justification per IEC 62305 may also be required from your design consultant.

There's no fixed minimum. LPS components, air terminals, conductor tape, clamps, typically get ordered against a specific building or structure's design bill of quantities, and often travel consolidated with earthing material into one shipment.

A perimeter LPS earth conductor with multiple driven rods (typically every 30–50 m) is bonded to the array's earth grid. Modules and inverter cabinets are bonded to that grid. The whole forms a Type-B foundation earth that meets IEC 62305 and IEC 61730 (PV-specific). We design the configuration on request.
