How many earth rods do I need for a substation or data centre?

It comes down entirely to soil resistivity and the target resistance you're designing to, often 1 ohm for data centres and generating stations, 2 ohms for major substations, per IS 3043. A single rod in 100 ohm-m soil delivers roughly 25 to 30 ohms on its own, so reaching 1 ohm usually needs a buried counterpoise grid: a perimeter ring of strip with rods spaced along it, sized from an actual soil resistivity survey using the Wenner 4-pin method, not a rule of thumb.

Chemical earthing uses a hollow electrode, usually copper-bonded pipe, filled with a conductive, moisture-retaining compound that holds resistance low through dry or high-resistivity soil across seasons. Specify it for critical installations, data centres and telecom towers especially, in dry climates.

Why does the coupling material matter on sectional earth rods?

The coupling, where two rod sections join, is the most vulnerable point in the whole installation. A carbon-steel coupling on a copper-bonded rod creates a bimetallic junction that corrodes far faster than the rod body itself, particularly in aggressive soil. Specify stainless steel or solid copper couplings every time, and treat a mild-steel coupling offered "to save cost" as a warning sign, not a bargain.

For transformers above 1 MVA and motors above 500 kW, move to 95 or 120 sq mm, the prospective earth-fault current at that rating makes the smaller size a fault-current bottleneck. The exact cross-section is set by IS 3043 Table 3 or the IEEE 80 conductor sizing formula using the maximum fault current and relay clearing time.
