When is closed trunking the right choice over an open tray?

Accepted Answer

Closed trunking shields cables from dust, falling debris, mechanical impact and casual contact — choose it for switch rooms, exposed building runs, walkway-adjacent routing and areas with public access. Open trays cost less and dissipate heat better, but they expose the cabling. Many EPCs mix the two: trunking in occupied zones, trays in plant rooms.

Are screw-fixed covers worth the extra labour over snap-on?

Accepted Answer

Snap-on covers are quick to install and remove for maintenance but can lift in high-vibration or wash-down areas. Screw-fixed covers (with captive M6 screws or quarter-turn cam locks) are the right call for petrochem, marine, and any outdoor exposed routing. Hospital tunnels and metro stations also tend to specify screw-fix.

What's the maximum section size you supply?

Accepted Answer

Our roll-formed and folded trunking goes up to 300×100 mm in continuous lengths. Above that we fabricate built-up trunking from sheet — common on large vertical risers in skyscrapers and BMS spine routes. Share the schedule and we'll quote either approach.

Question 4

Does trunking need bonding straps at every joint?

Accepted Answer

Yes — for the trunking to act as a continuous earth and EMC shield, every joint needs a coupler plate or external bond strap to bridge any paint or galvanizing oxide layer. IS/IEC bonding practice requires <50 mΩ joint resistance. We supply the bonding hardware as part of the accessories pack.

Can trunking carry mixed-voltage cabling?

Accepted Answer

Only with internal dividers (or compartmented trunking). IEC 60364 requires separation between low-voltage power and ELV signal/data cabling. We supply dividers in matched finish, height-stepped to suit the largest cable, so the installation passes audit cleanly.

Which finish copes best with kitchen and food-processing wash-down?

Accepted Answer

Stainless steel 304 (or 316 where chlorides exist) brush-finished is the food-industry default — it withstands hot wash-down and tolerates chloride sanitisers. HDG trunking with epoxy powder coating is the economical alternative, but powder coating chips eventually expose steel.

What is your typical lead time for project trunking with bespoke sizes?

Accepted Answer

Standard sizes (50×50 to 200×100 mm) ship in 2–3 weeks. Bespoke widths or punched access cutouts add 1–2 weeks for tooling. Export documentation (commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, MTC) is issued within 48 hours of dispatch.

How is trunking sized — by cable count or fill area?

Accepted Answer

Both. IEC 60364-5-52 caps the cable cross-section fill at about 45 % of the trunking internal area for thermal reasons; on top of that, mechanical bending radii of the largest cable set the trunking height. We have sized sheets available for common cable types — share the schedule and we'll come back with the right section.

Question 9

Is fire-rated trunking available for life-safety circuits?

Accepted Answer

Fire-rated trunking (E30, E60, E90) is a specialist line — typically MS construction with intumescent gasket and qualified to BS 6387 or BS 8519 categories. For emergency lighting and smoke-control wiring on Indian and GCC projects we offer it on dedicated batches with the fire test certificate.

Question 10

Can buyers in the GCC procure trunking with Saudi SASO or UAE EQM marking?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we ship to Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain regularly. SASO conformity assessment (through an approved body), UAE EQM and Qatar QGOSM are handled at the documentation stage. Share the project specification and we'll quote the certification cost separately.
