Can I use channel trays for solar DC string cabling?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we supply channel trays in pre-galvanized GI or aluminium for DC string routing between modules and combiner boxes on ground-mount solar farms. Aluminium (6063-T6) is lighter and corrosion-free. GI is the standard for utility-scale projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka where cost and stiffness matter. We include pre-welded cleat brackets for DC bonding.

What's the standard length, and can it be cut on site?

We ship 2.5 m and 3.0 m lengths as standard. Site cutting with a chop saw is fine — apply a cold zinc-rich primer to the cut edge to keep the galvanizing's cathodic protection intact. We also supply pre-cut lengths to BOQ for projects that want zero site rework.

Does aluminium channel tray need bonding to earth?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Even though aluminium is conductive, the oxide film insulates joints — so a discrete earth strap with toothed washers at each joint, and a tray-to-structure bond at intervals, is needed for EMC and fault-clearing. IS/IEC bonding rules apply equally to aluminium.

Is the channel tray suitable for fire-survival cabling?

On its own, a steel channel won't certify the cable as fire-survival — that depends on the cable construction. But mineral-insulated or fire-resistant cables routed on HDG channel trays remain code-compliant for life-safety circuits in commercial buildings, provided fixings are also fire-rated.

What's the difference between a channel tray and a strut channel (Unistrut)?

A channel tray carries cables; strut channel is a structural framing member (used to build supports for trays and pipes). The two are often confused on BOQs. We supply both, including matched cantilever brackets that anchor a channel tray onto a strut backbone — useful for retrofit jobs.

Bond each tray to the plant earth grid every 30 m using a tinned copper strap and toothed washer. For solar plants the channel tray often doubles as a continuous earth path — verify continuity to <0.5 Ω with a low-resistance ohmmeter after installation. Drawings noting the bond points avoid site rework.
