Buying stair treads & nosings — answered
Practical answers for procurement, engineering and EPC teams — covering specification, standards, finish, lead time and export logistics.
Open-grating treads with serrated bearing bars and a checker-plate or fiberglass nosing strip are the industrial default per IS 2713. The going (depth) is 240 or 270 mm, rise 175–200 mm. The bearing bar height matches the platform grating so the same panel sizes flow up the stair.
International safety codes (and good practice) call for a contrasting colour on the leading edge of every tread for visibility. Yellow, orange or photoluminescent strips are common. We supply the nosing with the contrast strip pre-painted or pre-bonded.
Yes — share the stringer drawing and we'll drill the carrier plates to match. This eliminates site rework. Bolt holes are usually 14 mm clear for M12 bolts; specify if your project uses different fasteners.
Yes — spiral-stair treads are fabricated as wedge-shaped panels with an inner and outer carrier plate. The bearing bars run parallel to the outer edge. Specify the inner and outer radius, the rise and the number of treads per turn.
Standard tread sizes ship in 2 weeks; bespoke (drilled to project stringer, spiral-stair, large quantities) take 3–4 weeks. For multi-storey industrial plants we often hold the steel and galvanize against weekly site call-offs.

Manufacturing & Surface Treatment
All products are manufactured at Vajra's Howrah facility under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. In-house roll-forming, welding, galvanizing and testing — without sub-contractor dependency — ensures consistent dimensional accuracy and surface quality across export orders.
Precision Roll-Forming
CNC roll-forming lines capable of ±0.1 mm dimensional tolerance on MS, GI, SS, and aluminium sections.
Hot-Dip Galvanizing
In-house HDG plant conforming to ASTM A123 / IS 2629. Average coating: 85–140 µm. Pre-treatment: alkaline degreasing → pickling → fluxing.
Welding & Fabrication
MIG, TIG, SAW welding. Coded welders under ASME IX / IS 2825 qualification. Weld inspection by UT / DPT available.
Surface Treatment
Hot-dip galvanizing · Pre-galvanized GI · Powder coating (Tribo gun, 60–80 µm DFT) · Mill finish · Chromate passivation.
