What tolerance class do you hold on CNC parts?

Accepted Answer

We routinely hold ISO 2768-fine (±0.05 mm on dimensions, ±0.1° on angles). For instrument-grade and defence work we go tighter — ±0.01 mm on critical dimensions, verified by CMM. The tolerance class drives the tooling, fixturing and inspection regime — share the drawing and we'll quote against it.

Which materials are routine for your CNC work?

Accepted Answer

Steel (EN 8, EN 19, EN 24, EN 36), stainless (304, 316, 17-4 PH), aluminium (6061, 6063, 7075), brass, bronze, and specialty alloys (Inconel, titanium, monel) on request. Material certs travel with every batch. For defence we hold special-grade material under controlled storage.

What's your typical batch size — prototype or production?

Accepted Answer

We run from prototype (1–5 off) through small-batch production (50–2000 off). Above 2000 we adapt the process (cellular fixturing, fixturing change-over reduction, multi-spindle setups) to manage cost. The crossover from CNC machining to dedicated tooling is around 10,000 off per year.

How is first-article inspection (FAI) handled?

Accepted Answer

AS9102 first-article inspection reports for every new part. Critical-to-Function (CTF) dimensions are measured on a CMM, all dimensions on the drawing are 100 % checked at FAI, then sampled at production runs. We share the FAI report with the first batch dispatch.

Do you support build-to-print defence supply with ITAR-equivalent controls?

Accepted Answer

We operate under DGQA-acceptable material traceability for Indian defence supply. For sensitive items we keep heat-batch material under controlled storage, restrict drawing access, and document the chain of custody. Third-party inspection (DGAQA, NABL labs) is welcomed.

What's the typical lead time for a first-prototype CNC part?

Accepted Answer

A first-prototype turned or milled component, from drawing to inspected sample, is 3–7 days subject to material availability. Subsequent batches drop to 1–2 weeks for small quantities, 3–4 weeks for mid-volume production.

Are surface treatments handled in-house?

Accepted Answer

Tinning, plating (zinc, nickel, chrome), powder coating, anodising (Type II and III) and phosphating are managed through partnered vendors located within the same industrial cluster — short transit, controlled QA. Heat treatment (annealing, hardening, tempering) is similarly partnered.

Do you offer a fixed-fixture cost model for repeat production?

Accepted Answer

Yes — once a part is set up on a fixture, repeat orders avoid the fixture-build cost. For OEMs running quarterly orders we amortise the fixture cost on first batch and run subsequent batches at machining-only rate. The pricing model is transparent on the quote.

What's the defence export potential of Indian CNC work right now?

Accepted Answer

The defence offset policy and the iDEX initiative have created a structured pipeline for Indian Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers to global primes. Vajra has supplied precision parts under the offset framework — the opportunity for Indian small-and-medium CNC shops to integrate into US, EU and Israeli defence supply chains is growing.

How do you handle drawing changes mid-production?

Accepted Answer

Change orders are formalised — the new revision is recorded, prior batches are documented in the QA file, and the change is implemented at the next batch with sample sign-off. For long-run production we maintain a 'last-revision-as-built' record so the OEM has clean traceability for warranty cases.
