Kolkata/Howrah has built up real depth in copper-bonding and GI earthing manufacture, with electroplating lines and Kolkata/Haldia port access close together. Going direct to a Howrah factory cuts out the trading-house layer that tends to creep in when earthing material gets bundled through a general hardware exporter instead of a specialist.

A conventional maintained pit, rod plus watering pipe and funnel, costs less and is standard for most industrial and substation work, but it needs periodic watering in dry seasons to hold resistance down. A chemical or maintenance-free pit costs more upfront and holds resistance stable without watering at all. It earns that premium at remote sites, telecom towers, or anywhere site visits are infrequent.

A Mill Test Certificate for the steel core, a copper-coating thickness (DFT) certificate per IEC 62561-2 or IEEE 837, and, where specified, an independent third-party test report from SGS, TÜV or Bureau Veritas. Ask for these ahead of shipment. Chasing them down after a site audit flags their absence is a much worse conversation to have.

IS 3043 specifies 600×600 mm minimum for copper plates at 3 mm thickness, and 600×600 mm for GI at 6 mm. Burial depth of 3.0–3.5 m in a 600 mm wide brick-lined pit is the working standard. Depth is the primary lever for reducing resistance, going from 2 m to 3.5 m typically halves resistance in layered soils. Salt-and-charcoal backfill (or GEM for export work) reduces seasonal variation.
