Buying lattice tower members — answered
Practical answers for procurement, engineering and EPC teams — covering specification, standards, finish, lead time and export logistics.
Angle members (L-sections) are bolted lattice — easy to fabricate, transport in bundles, and assemble on remote sites. Tubular members (CHS) are welded or flanged sections — sleeker appearance, less wind drag, but heavier transport units. Transmission and telecom towers in India are mostly angle; some monopoles are tubular.
IS 802 (use of structural steel in overhead transmission line towers) and the supplementary IS 5613 are the Indian standards. International projects also cite ASCE 10 (US) and IEC 60826. Our fabrication is to IS 802 with galvanizing to ASTM A123 — accepted globally.
ASTM A123 minimum 86 µm zinc coating for members 6 mm and thicker; 75 µm for thinner members. Some utilities (PowerGrid, ADWEA) specify higher — 120 µm or class M for coastal corridors. We bath-test every batch with a magnetic thickness gauge and ship the test report.
Yes — every member is steel-stamped (or laser-engraved on visible faces) with the tower number, member ID and orientation. Match-marking matters because lattice towers have thousands of bolts and getting an angle reversed costs days of site standdown. Our marking system is BOQ-tagged.
Vajra runs CNC angle lines that shear, punch, notch and mark angle members in a single pass. Tolerances on hole positions are ±0.5 mm — required for fast bolted assembly. The CNC NC files come from the tower designer's STAAD or PLS-TOWER export, so there's no drafting drift.
Manufacturing & Surface Treatment
All products are manufactured at Vajra's Howrah facility under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. In-house roll-forming, welding, galvanizing and testing — without sub-contractor dependency — ensures consistent dimensional accuracy and surface quality across export orders.
Precision Roll-Forming
CNC roll-forming lines capable of ±0.1 mm dimensional tolerance on MS, GI, SS, and aluminium sections.
Hot-Dip Galvanizing
In-house HDG plant conforming to ASTM A123 / IS 2629. Average coating: 85–140 µm. Pre-treatment: alkaline degreasing → pickling → fluxing.
Welding & Fabrication
MIG, TIG, SAW welding. Coded welders under ASME IX / IS 2825 qualification. Weld inspection by UT / DPT available.
Surface Treatment
Hot-dip galvanizing · Pre-galvanized GI · Powder coating (Tribo gun, 60–80 µm DFT) · Mill finish · Chromate passivation.
