A standard 14.2 mm × 1.5 m copper-bonded rod with 250 µm coating runs roughly USD 3 to 6 per piece FOB India, moving with copper price, coating thickness and order volume. The 17.2 mm × 3.0 m size costs more. GI pipe electrodes come in cheaper still. Use these as budgeting figures and confirm against current copper pricing and your exact specification before locking a number into a project budget.

Rods, whether copper-bonded or GI, are the default for most substations, data centres and industrial plants. They install faster, couple for extra depth, and IS 3043 is largely built around them. Plates earn their place where driving is impractical: rocky ground, confined plant areas, existing concrete. Most substation designs lean on rods as the primary electrode and add plates or strip to bring the overall grid resistance down further.

They're not really competing options, most IS 3043 designs use both. Rods do the vertical work: driven into the soil and coupled for extra depth, they're the default primary electrode for substations and data centres because they reach moisture at depth with the smallest footprint. Strip does the horizontal work: buried flat, it forms the counterpoise grid or bonding ring that ties multiple rods together and brings the overall grid resistance down, and it's the practical choice where driving isn't: rocky ground, shallow soil over rock, or short bonding runs between equipment. A single rod alone rarely meets a 1 to 2 ohm target in moderate-to-high resistivity soil; a rod-and-strip grid usually does.

Copper lasts 40 or more years in most Indian soils, holds lower contact resistance throughout its life, and is the unambiguous choice for substations, data centres, hospitals and any site where earthing failure is not an option. GI plate is adequate for general factory and warehouse earthing where soil pH is between 6 and 8, chlorides are modest and the budget is tight, it costs roughly 60 % less. The deciding factors are: soil corrosivity (ask for a pH and chloride report), the criticality of the connected equipment and the design life of the installation. If in doubt, copper pays for itself.
