IS 3043 is the Indian earthing code. It sets resistance targets (1 ohm for generating stations, 2 ohms for major substations, 10 ohms for domestic) and basic electrode rules. IEC 62561 is the international standard for earthing and lightning-protection components, and it specifies test methods for corrosion, mechanical strength and the copper-bonding thickness itself. For export projects, ask for compliance with both; they complement each other rather than compete.

A standard 14.2 mm × 1.5 m copper-bonded rod with 250 µm coating runs roughly USD 3 to 6 per piece FOB India, moving with copper price, coating thickness and order volume. The 17.2 mm × 3.0 m size costs more. GI pipe electrodes come in cheaper still. Use these as budgeting figures and confirm against current copper pricing and your exact specification before locking a number into a project budget.

Rods, whether copper-bonded or GI, are the default for most substations, data centres and industrial plants. They install faster, couple for extra depth, and IS 3043 is largely built around them. Plates earn their place where driving is impractical: rocky ground, confined plant areas, existing concrete. Most substation designs lean on rods as the primary electrode and add plates or strip to bring the overall grid resistance down further.

Saudi Aramco and NEOM project earthing specifications follow IEC 62561-1 for conductor joints and IEC 62561-3 for conductor connectors. They require tinned copper strip rather than GI in most areas because the desert soil has high sulfate content that attacks zinc coatings within 10 years. UAE DEWA and Abu Dhabi ADPower specs follow the same IEC references. Both markets require an IEC 62561 material certificate, a SASO or UAE ESMA conformity declaration and (for Aramco) a Vendor Registration approval.
